Illya stretched out along the garish hotel coverlet, his back propped against a pile of pillows. The neat gray trousers and white dress shirt, open at the throat, were a welcome change from the oil-stained coveralls which he had placed in the Servidor earlier, and which were currently in the basement, confounding the laundresses. The Chronicle lay at his side, consumed and discarded. He flipped a page of The New York Times and muttered to himself as he scanned the text.

Napoleon exited the bathroom. Illya flicked a glance over the top of the paper, then raised his head, blue eyes wide. “What are you dressed up for?”

His partner crossed to the dresser, brushing an invisible mark from the sleeve of his tuxedo jacket. “Dinner.”

“A bit fancy for room service.”

“I have a date,” he replied smugly and fastened his watch.

Illya pulled the heavy box to the edge of the trunk. “Here, take this.” He looked over his shoulder and found he had been talking to empty air. “Now where did he go?”

Sasha pushed a wheeled bin toward the minivan. “Lee? He’s already got his nose to the grindstone.”

Illya’s gaze followed his son’s pointing finger to the women’s wing of the dormitory. An identical blond leaned against the railing of the loading dock, talking to a girl with a clipboard.

It seemed like a dream, but Napoleon Solo knew he was wide awake. That made things even worse, because what he was facing was a test he didn’t quite believe he would pass.

The corridor in front of him was a convoluted, modish nightmare of a thing. The checkerboard floor was waving before his eyes, dropping off into nothingness.

Five Senses

It was very quiet in the gallery; there was space and peace to stand and stare. Ravishing colours, sensuous lines, smooth marble, polished wood. He was absorbed by it.

On the way out he passed Rodin’s The Kiss and stopped to admire the extraordinary beauty of this tender, loving embrace.

Outside, the light on the river had changed from grey to a dull yellow. To the right the sky was still bright, but looking up towards Westminster, a black sky showed a storm approaching. He debated whether to walk all the way back to Trafalgar Square – towards the storm – or to go by the shorter route round to Pimlico Station and take the underground.

Summer storms in London took some beating. It had been a stifling morning and he was only in shirt sleeves; he decided to make for the tube. It made no difference, a rising wind announced the arrival of the storm before he had got very far, and cold soaking rain began to saturate his hair and shirt; it bounced up from the pavement drenching his trousers and filling his shoes. Stinging hail decided him that discretion was the better part of valour and he took refuge under a porch in one of the rundown terraces in the area to wait it out. His clothes clung to his skin; he began to feel cold and wrapped his arms round himself.

The American agent telephoned from Vienna with a change of plan. He told him that the Russian agent being sent from New York, who would arrive soon, had to be recalled, and when he had gone, he would come to take Pyotr to a safe place with facilities to continue his work.

Pyotr told his children simply that they needed to escape government surveillance and were being helped by an agent from an international law enforcement organisation.

Part 1. Yugoslavia

Chapter 1

Naturally reserved, needing no companionship, K preferred solitude; but, somehow, he felt increasingly depressed alone, both in his apartment and in his office. Maybe he was ill. The feeling of lassitude and indifference must be down to flu or some other virus.

Some of his colleagues who had known him for years knew better. They were aware of at least part of the story and recognised what it was. He generally ignored friendly overtures of sympathy or, worse, pity – which won them only his glare or the polite indifference that prevented anyone from getting too close. But, nevertheless, they were right. Since his partner of so many years had left – with not even a backward glance – he had changed. It wasn’t just anger and humiliation, he was lonely.

It was a standing joke between them, but in fact, they never intruded unasked, or without good reason, on each other’s privacy; their preferred social lives were different, and for the most part separate; their love lives were - at least on K’s part - discreet. His partner’s, of course, was inclined to extend beyond the private - K’s, never. The girls in his life were artists, musicians; Village people, streetwise and capable of dealing with his lack of commitment. The women in his partner’s life were quite different – Fifth Avenue, sophisticated, expensive; sometimes dangerous, and equally uninterested in commitment.

The jokey phrase, however, mattered very deeply to their professional partnership. They knew each other’s thought patterns, likely choices of action, preferred operational style. They had saved each other many times from total disaster, though not always from injury. They were like brothers; mostly fond and forgiving, sometimes hating and furious, but always there. So, the day his partner left, it was a profound and humiliating shock.

He had come in as usual; had been closeted with the Old Man for a while; had returned to the office and said, “I’m off, now. Goodbye old friend – I’m sorry.” He had shaken his hand, tapped his cheek, and left him standing alone, stunned.

“You didn’t know?” asked his colleagues.

“Didn’t he say anything before…?” asked the support staff.
